the art of conscious cooking

Bringing awareness, intention, love and the beauty way to your cooking process is to master the Art of Conscious Cooking. When you prepare nourishing foods for mamas post-birth, you have the honor of not only feeding their bodies, but nourishing their souls and healing them with your warmth. There are special warming foods that are excellent for postpartum women to eat, and we will tell you all about those, BUT make sure the first postpartum meals your mamas get are EXACTLY what they want. Even if it’s chili cheese fries. Our relationship to food is a deep journey and we must look closely at the comfort and memories that certain meals produce to understand our cravings for various foods at certain times in our lives. We honor a woman, when we can meet that request. Once that need has been met, offering them warming soups, teas, spices that warm and foods that can help her milk supply will bring her back to restorative health and give her a chance to re-balance her body and she feeds herself and her newborn baby.

Welcome to the Art of Conscious Cooking!

Creating a Sacred Kitchen

By: Antonette Vasseur, CHLC

Stay in awe of the miracle of food and make it a priority each day to protect the sacredness of your kitchen. The energy of this space goes into the meals you create. Fill it with pure, energetic love.

Consider turning your kitchen into a SACRED SPACE and remember everything you do around food will be your children’s food legacy and traditions...Let us know on FB if you decide to do this! Thank you Antonette for sharing this piece with us for the Sacred Pregnancy Magazine.

Your kitchen is the ultimate mirror that reflects how you treat your sacred temple. Stand in your kitchen and take a look around. What does your kitchen say about your state of health? Is it open and full of nourishing, vibrant, beautiful energy? Or is it unorganized, chaotic and leaves you feeling frustrated with cupboards full of everything, yet you have nothing that is truly life sustaining to feed your loved ones?

In my home, our kitchen is our center, our life force. It is constantly buzzing with energy as meals and snacks are prepared for a family of five, morning, noon and night. How do I keep this healthy energy flowing, and organized, day in and day out? By creating a Sacred Kitchen, a warm space that nourishes a family on all levels, and allows mindful food preparation with an “attitude of gratitude” towards seasonal bounty.

Purge

Opening up space in the kitchen makes way for healthy and happy energy to flow freely. Clearing out the clutter eliminates feelings of chaos. Go through drawers, cupboards and pantries and take inventory of what you have. Keep what you need and use, donate what no longer serves you, and toss out items that are no longer functional. Take a moment to wipe the insides of drawers and cupboards before restocking. Cleanliness is next to GODDESS-ness!

Arrange the items in your kitchen in a way that will serve you. Put things away that you don't use often and only collect dust. Sit the blender out on your counter to motivate you to make those green smoothies you swore you would make yourself every morning!
Picture

Organize

Your kitchen should be organized in a way that makes you want to use it.

When we organize our pantries we often bump into our own food vices. Let go of the things that truly do not nourish you. Donate it to your local food bank and toss whatever is expired.

Re-organizing and cleaning your Sacred Kitchen is about more than just creating good energy. Make sure the items and the food you choose to live in that space FEEDS you, mind, body and soul. We respect and honor the spaces we create in.

How could you better organize your kitchen and bring in inspiration?

Sacred Space and earth connections

Our body craves seasonal connection and by adding a few earth elements to your kitchen space, you can create a pleasant reminder of where our food comes from. It gives us the space to honor Mother Earth with more than just the dishes we create.

Fill your kitchen with seasonal plants and flowers. A few potted herbs near your cooking space allows you add fresh herbs to your dishes in a pinch and is pleasing to the eye!

Add pictures and decorations that remind you of the sacred connection you and your family share with food. Hang up words of prayer, blessings or affirmations.

Create a “nature table”, or a sacred space in your kitchen where you can bring the seasons indoors. Add fresh flowers, leaves, or beautiful stones that you and your children have found during nature walks.

colorful inspirations

Putting whole fresh foods on display adds to the positive life force energy you are creating in your kitchen. Healthier food choices are made when healthy, colorful options are readily available.

Fill beautiful bowls and market baskets with fresh, local, organic seasonal fruits and vegetables. Display today's harvest from your garden and imagine all of the ways that you could use it in your meals today. Honor Gaia in this space with colorful inspiration to CREATE nourishing meals for your family.

Meal Planning

Meal planning gives us the answer to “What's for dinner?” It removes all negative energy and anxieties surrounding meal prep. By taking the time to plan out your meals and snacks for the week, you are honoring your Sacred Kitchen and allowing yourself to walk into this space with joy and anticipation, instead of frustration and dread.

Meal planning is not only a great way to plan meals for the week ahead, but it also simplifies grocery shopping and minimizes the chances of buying foods that aren't whole or healthy from entering your sacred space.

Office binders are great for creating your own seasonal recipe books. One for Spring and Summer and another for Fall and Winter. Divide them into categories: Breakfast, Lunch, Appetizers, Salads, Entrees, Sides, Breads and Desserts.

Organize your cookbooks and put them where you can see them, and where you will USE them. Donate cook books you no longer use or need to your local public library. Host a cookbook swap and invite your friends!

After creating your meal plan and grocery list, take note of seasonal items you can get from local farmers markets or organic food co ops.

Energy Cleansing

Cleansing energy in your kitchen clears out stagnant and negative energy allowing you to prepare meals at a higher vibration.

Throw open your windows and let in some fresh air. Air flow in the early mornings and late evenings helps to get the good energy circling and flowing.

Bless your kitchen with a sage smudge. Smudging is a ritual where a bundle of sage, or other herbs, are burned in an intentional way to cleanse out negative energy and replenish healing, nourishing energy.

To sell food!!

Every food business must follow strict sanitary and safety measures when handling, preparing and cooking food. As a Mother Roaster, if you are going to be reselling food to your postpartum mamas you will need to obtain a food handler’s license. Requirements for such a license will vary state by state. Luckily, you can take the course and obtain your license online. Be sure to check with your state for its individual health department codes.

NOTE:: To find out more about your state requirements and regulations, or to find or enroll in a course, visit ServSafe (https://www.servsafe.com). Don’t forget to also check out Food Handler, Inc (http://www.foodhandler.com) for further food safety training videos.

Food Tree

Birthing a baby, as we know, is hard work. It not only takes its toll on the mother and baby, but also on the mother’s partner. While mom not only needs time to rest and begin healing, the whole family needs good quality family time to begin the bonding process. A food tree is a great way to help with that process.

A food tree is similar in concept to a phone tree. A group of people come together to sign up to bring dinners to the new family. Single-handedly, this can be one of the greatest gifts and stress alleviators. By not needing to worry about cooking dinners, the new family can really delve in to bonding and getting to know the newest member of the family.

The person who takes charge of setting up the food tree should do so well in advance of baby’s arrival. A good time to reach out to people may be at the baby shower or Mother’s Honoring Ceremony. Begin asking people if they’d like to help fix a meal or two and bring them to the new family after baby arrives. Be sure to get their name, phone number and email address. Optimally, you want to try to get enough people for approximately two weeks worth of dinners. If there are enough people that the meals can stretch beyond two weeks, that’s even better.

When trying to plan out meals, make sure to take note of the new mother’s favorite foods. If there are dietary restrictions or special needs, it will be important to note those as well. The only thing you may not be able to take into account are any dietary changes that may occur as a result of the delivery; for example, if the mother has a caesarean section, there may be certain foods she may need to avoid for a short period of time. While unexpected situations may arise, knowing the mother’s likes, and what foods to avoid, will help all involved with the food tree meal planning.

Another good thing to keep in mind is that after a few days of dinners being delivered, leftovers may begin to pile up. So while  bringing them meals everyday is a wonderful thing, what you may want to consider setting up is a few days worth of daily dinners, and then stagger to dinners every other day. In addition to keeping the new family’s refrigerator from bursting at the seams with uneaten food, it will also help to lengthen the amount of time that dinners are delivered to them. Set up a calendar assigning each participant a certain day (or days if he or she has agreed to make more than one dinner) that they are to bring dinner to the new family. Be sure to send each person a copy, along with the likes/dislikes in food and dietary restrictions if there are any. Allow for each person to write-in what they are willing to bring on their assigned day, making sure that duplicate meals aren’t being delivered.

We will be spending the next 2 lessons on Food /Drink Preparations for postpartum women, so you will need to get your cooking aprons out, and know that this is a major service you can offer women in your communities. Gonna’ have some fun in the kitchen this week ladies!
